According to National Speed Sport News at the time, this driver was the first to flip his midget, sprint car and silver crown all in the same year. He also later flipped an Indy Car a decade later.

You are correct.
Duane "Pancho" Carter Jr., flipped his Steve Stapp sprinter during the fair race at Terre Haute, his Dirt Car at DuQuoin in September and his midget sometime earlier in the summer, but I'm not certain where that happened. Possibly Santa Fe Speedway. All during 1973. In the 1980s, wind got under Carter's Indy Car during practice and flipped it upside down, spinning like a top -- sometimes literally on his head. His helmet had spots worn completely through by the asphalt. Carter laughed about the sprint car crash a couple of years ago saying he was getting in line for the Ferris Wheel and didn't even have a ticket. He went over the guardrail in the first turn and was heading toward the Ferris Wheel. Not certain if he made it through the chain link fence but they pretty much loaded parts up iin baskets. That was the first "big" crash I ever saw. Jim Morrison |
