From a Manzy Press release by Windy McDonald:

The 2008 auto racing season gets underway at Manzanita Speedway Saturday night, February 9 and those fans in attendance will be the first to see the "new look" . The old concession stand is no more as it has been replaced by an ultra modern stand that will serve fans in rapid order ending the long lines that were the norm in the past. The only thing need is the paint and that will be applied before the U-Pull-It 150 lap Bomber Enduro.

Those fans will also be the first to use the new aluminum bleachers that have replace the wooden ones that have be in use for most of Manzy's 58 years. The AA, BB, CC and DD bleachers have already been changed and by the time USAC invades the track for the second annual Copper on Dirt February 15-16 all the wood will be gone and aluminum will be in place.

35th Avenue has been known as one of the worst streets in Phoenix but that will be changed, maybe in time for the Copper race. The new bridge is in place but only one lane each way is ready. All that is needed is the finishing of the road getting on and off the west side of the bridge. That will probably take less than a month.

The Enduro, AKA Motorized Mayhem will take place on Manzy's one third mile track with 70-80 bombers expected to vie for the $1000 first place prize. Half of the 150 laps will be run with the cars making the usual left hand turns and the other half of the race will be reversed.

The Copper on Dirt attracted 130 cars last year with USAC Silver Crown, USAC National and Western Midgets and USAC/CRA sprint cars sharing the famed half mile track.

Tracy Hines dominated the Friday night qualifying races as he took the main event wins in all three divisions. However he was shut out in the Saturday night finale that featured 120 main event laps. Cory Kruesman won the Midget main event and unheralded Ricky Stenhouse jump started his career as he won both the sprint and silver crown races. When Hines was injured in an off track accident Stenhouse was hired by Tony Stewart as his replacement.

The gates will open at 3:00 P.M.. each evening with qualifying beginning at 6:30. The qualifying process will be different this year with several cars on the track at one time with the transponders in each car sending their times to the computer.

Tickets for the Copper are available at the Manzanita Speedway box office, 35th Avenue and Broadway. Credit card orders may be placed by calling 602 276-7575.
