ASCS Canyon Region Gears Up for Weiler Salute to Indy

Lonnie Wheatley, TULSA, Okla. (May 14, 2008) – With eight events already in the books, the wingless forces of the Discount Tire Co. ASCS Canyon Region will take full advantage of an idle weekend to prepare for the upcoming Wayne Weiler Salute to Indy, which is slated for Saturday night, May 24, atop Manzanita Speedway's 1/3-mile clay oval in Phoenix, AZ.

And this year's edition of the Weiler Salute to Indy will be truly spectacular, with the night's feature event slated for 51 laps in distance in tribute to Weiler, who has long been regarded as one of Manzanita's greatest drivers and, more importantly, a man of great character whose home was always open to racers that made the journey to Phoenix.

There will be added purse money for the 51-lap spectacular, with Arizona Race Mart working out the final details for the event. More information regarding specifics will be made available next week.

Defending ASCS Canyon Region champion and Weiler race winner Jeremy Sherman is out to the early lead in 2008 series points, holding a slim 22-point advantage over Charles Davis, Jr. Both Sherman and Davis have claimed three victories each, with Casey Shuman and R.J. Johnson also posting series victories.

The Saturday night, May 24, Arizona Race Mart Wayne Weiler Salute to Indy featuring the Discount Tire Co. ASCS Canyon Region is set to go green at 7:00 p.m.

Manzanita Speedway is located in Phoenix, AZ, off I-10 Exit 141, then four miles south on 35th Avenue to West Broadway. For more information, contact the track at 602-276-7575.

The Discount Tire Co. ASCS Canyon Region brings the best in non-wing Sprint Car racing to Arizona with a full slate of 29 nights of racing in 2008. In addition to events atop both the ½-mile and 1/3-mile ovals at Manzanita Speedway in Phoenix, the series will also be in action at Tucson's USA Race Park and Casa Grande's Central Arizona Raceway over the course of the season.

The nation's most prominent Sprint Car sanctioning body with 14 different Regions throughout the United States in addition to the O'Reilly American Sprint Cars on Tour National series, the American Sprint Car Series' (ASCS) 17th year of activity will include approximately 250 nights of racing at more than 100 different race tracks throughout 28 different states and Canada.
