1967 USAC MIDGET REVIEW: GRAND KENYON MAKES A HEROIC COMEBACK FOR TITLE #2

By: Richie Murray – USAC Media

Winning an all-time single-season series record 17 features in 49 starts, Mel Kenyon well and truly won the 1967 USAC National Midget championship, racking up 492.55 points to win his second series crown by an overwhelming margin.

Overcoming the handicap of a severely burned left hand, Mel made his comeback in the spring of 1966 by using a special glove used in conjunction with a pin on the steering wheel so that he could steer with the palm of his left hand.* He wasted no time in getting started on his 1967 campaign and was in the lead before the end of the indoor season in January.

Mel drove the entire season with the attractive blue No. 61 Thermo King Auto Air Conditioning Special owned by him and his brother Don who served as the chief mechanic.* The pair won the entrant title for the third successive year.

Having recently moved from Davenport, Iowa to a new residence in Lebanon, Ind. with his wife Marieanne, Mel led wire-to-wire to capture the 100-lap USAC midget feature race at Fort Wayne, Indiana’s Allen County War Memorial Coliseum in January and at Ohio’s Cincinnati Gardens in February to be named the undisputed champion of the indoor winter circuit.

Among Mel’s finest career wins came during August’s Hut 100 at the Terre Haute (Ind.) Action Track where he led all 100 laps around the half-mile dirt surface prepared by 1956 and 1959 USAC Eastern Sprint Car champion, Tommy Hinnershitz.

Future champ Jimmy Caruthers’ claimed his first career series victory at California’s Rivergrade Speedway in March.* He returned home excitedly to report the triumph only to learn that his military draft notice had arrived while he was away.* However, the event was marred by the death of 11-time winner Jimmy Knight of Worth, Ill.* Knight, who built and drove his own racecars, succumbed to third degree burns on his hands and legs when his midget flipped and the fuel tank split.

Tragedy struck again in September when Gary Congdon, making his first series start of the season, was fatally injured on the 10th lap of the 50-lap feature event at the Terre Haute (Ind.) Action Track.* Congdon, who earlier had won his heat race, spun in turn three while attempting to avoid contact with the flipping car of Rick Davidson.* However, Davidson's machine landed in the cockpit of Congdon's car, which then led to Congdon's car careening through the inside guard rail.

During a February meeting, the board voted to return to the use of the name “Midgets,” and drop the use of “Compact Sprints,” the feeling being that it was confusing since the media often dropped the word “Compact,” thus making it a sprint race and confusing it with another USAC division.* The board also rejected a rules committee recommendation to mandate the use of an over-the-shoulder harness, and thus continued to be used in conjunction with seat belts.

In June, Bob Wente became the winningest midget driver in USAC's history when he broke his tie with the late Jimmy Davies in posting his 47th feature win at Michigan’s Berlin Raceway and, for good measure, copped the Santa Fe Speedway event the following night in Hinsdale, Ill. for his only two wins of the 1967 season.

In July at Ohio’s New Bremen Speedway, a new tradition began as the fans received a showmanship treat from the USAC National Midget field on the parade lap before the main event.* After running a lap in single file, the cars crossed over into rows of two, and after a lap in that position, crossed again to come past the grandstand running four abreast.

Sidelined for two-and-a-half months from May to July following the removal of his left kidney, Bob Tattersall took Jack Stroud's Honker II to victory on five occasions in 1967, with four of those victories coming after his surgery, the first of which came two weeks after his return to action at Tri-City Speedway in Granite City, Ill.

Reigning series champion Mike McGreevy was levied a one-week suspension and a $100 fine for an incident during a race he won the week prior at Michigan’s Flat Rock Speedway.

In September at Kentucky’s Florence Speedway, Don Meacham was hit by a rock and suffered a broken cheekbone and jawbone during the feature.* One week later, Meacham made a grand comeback at the Kentucky State Fairgrounds by setting the fastest time in qualifying and finishing sixth in the feature.

Gary Bettenhausen notched the first five USAC National Midget wins of his career in 1967 and, by doing so, became the first second generation winner with the series, following in the footsteps of his father, Tony, an eight-time victor between 1956-60.* Gary B. finished the year in grand fashion by scoring the 150-lap Turkey Night Grand Prix at Ascot Park.
