MMSA invaded the high banks of Tri-State Speedway in Haubstadt, IN this past Saturday night. The weather was hot and the humidity was agonizing, but that didn't keep the drivers away. As the drivers started to file in through the pit gate we knew it was going to be a night to remember. **
We began the night at 5:30 with 24 competitors ready to do battle. Unfortunately, that is when Mother Nature began to rear her ugly head. We were advised that we were being put on a "holding pattern" and the grandstands were emptied to ensure safety during the lightning storm that followed. After about a forty minute delay due to lightning, we were happy for a dry track and made ready to push cars off for hot laps. Just in time for the skies to open up for the next twenty minutes causing another hour delay. ** Finally at 9:30 we were starting heat race action. * Heat One saw 7 cars take the green flag and was won easily by Dean Parker. Heat Two rolled off with 7 cars and proved to be an incredibly tough 8 laps for a few cars. Early in the race Dalton Hayhurst bicycled going through turn 3 and 4; ultimately he ended up upside down, with a crumbled top wing and nose wing. He was able to drive the car off the track, but the crash ended his night as he had a broken front axle and had other damage to his machine. Heat Two was won by Brad Strunk. * Heat 3 had 8 cars and was won by Points Leader Cody Trammel. The Feature rolled off late with a strong 22 car field. **When the green flag dropped the field thundered into turn one, and just like that it was over for Devin Hayhurst, who took a wild ride upside down, up and into the wall sponsor boards, and finally ending up wedged between the barrier and the boards. ** When the race restarted the Columbus, IN driver Justin Lewis jumped out from and led several laps with Brad Strunk close to his bumper, even with several cautions early on. **** At about the midway point a yellow came out with Brad Strunk completing the pass at the line and the Mason, Ohio driver was able restart with the lead. The field would then be ThunderStrunk the remainder of the race as Brad never looked back. Strunk went on for his first MMSA win in the 2018 season now giving him 3 different mini sprints division wins on the season. ** Top ten were: Strunk, Lewis, Vermillion, Trammell, Rutherford, Smith, Schindler, Coffey, Deputy, and Moan! It was a long night for everyone, and the MMSA can’t thank the drivers enough for coming out and supporting the series. It proved that racers are one of the most dedicated athletes in the country, willing to wait out hours of rain just to put on a show for the fans.
