I know, I know. It’s pavement. And it’s wings. However, I need to take a moment to congratulate this year’s USAC Silver Crown champion Kody Swanson on another huge win this weekend.

Last night, Kody won the $50,000 Open Wheel Showdown at the Bullring at Las Vegas, a 100 lap race for pavement winged 410 sprint cars. It was Kody’s first time behind a winged pavement sprinter in over ten years.

Swanson was piloting the Dick Myers-owned #50m, a sprint car from the Midwest nicknamed “Seabiscuit”. The car was originally built by Rob Hoffman in 1991 and has had a long, winning history. Last night’s win just added to the car’s legend.

This was the second year of the Open Wheel Showdown, an event promoted by Davey Hamilton Jr. The event drew over 50 winged pavement sprint cars to Vegas, mostly from the Western US and Canada.

Oh, and I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention that Bobby Santos III finished second in last night’s race, taking $20,000 back home to Indiana.

I think the current pavement Silver Crown cars are about the sexiest race cars ever. A couple years ago at PRI I was geeking out over a winged pavement 410 that was on display. If you understand the power and the grip there you know they ain't no joke.

I just can't get into the actual racing, but I'm a Kody Swanson fan so right on for him.

There may be a couple drivers better at pure speed than Kody. But Kody can lay laps within a tenth over and over and over again and turn up the wick if he needs too. One of the most disciplined drivers I've ever seen. I'll run fourth for 40 laps and my tires will be 1/3rd better than the leaders the rest of the race. BAM, WINNER.

Santos has to be really sick of getting beat by Swanson. Also, last nights show was the most talent laden asphalt sprint car race I have ever seen. When Ryan Litt, Tyler Roahrig, and Troy Decaires don't qualify, you know it's a tough crowd.

That car has been the fastest car on the track every single time I have seen it run. No matter who was driving. I'm amazed it has not been copied.

Charles, do you know how old that chassis is? I swear I saw that car, or an older version, win a winged sprint car race at Winchester around 2006 or so.

The article say’s built in 1991. I seem to remember Cameron Dobson putting on a show at Winchester back in the day.

That's what it says. 91 Probably one built around the Buick days but they did use V8 for Stanley and others. I push one of these around every year for the Fish Fry. It's a heavy duty piece.

Rob also built a new Beast pavement car a couple years ago. Says nothings changed on em in 20yrs. So the technicalities of it haven't changed much in that time. JUST THE COST.

I thought Vegas was dirt. Remember champ car races there.

Unless I'm mistaken, Bobby Santos III is from Franklin Massachusetts
