1971 USAC MIDGET REVIEW: DANNY CARUTHERS, A TRAGIC CHAMPIONSHIP TALE

By: Richie Murray – USAC Media

Danny Caruthers, the youngest champion in USAC history, compressed an 18-year racing career into his 21-year life span.

With his closest competition coming from none other than his brother, Jimmy, Danny clinched the 1971 title with three races yet to go when tragedy struck, making them the first and only siblings to win the USAC National Midget title.

A mere one week and one day later after clinching, Danny was injured fatally when his throttle stuck while entering turn one during warmups for the 75-lap feature race at California’s Corona Raceway, sending his car crashing into the wall.* He suffered a basal skull fracture, among other injuries, and died five days later at County General Hospital in Riverside, Calif.

In his first full season on the circuit, the modest, dedicated Californian led the ranks with 12 feature victories en route to becoming the first posthumous champion in USAC’s history.* He moved into the point lead for good on June 30 with a victory at Pennsylvania’s Williams Grove Speedway and his 11 fast qualifying times led all drivers throughout the season.

The result put a somber postscript to an exciting Caruthers Brothers battle.* Jimmy, the defending champ, collected eight wins while driving a midget sponsored by actor and comedian Bill Cosby’s motion picture debut, “Man & Boy.”

Danny began racing at age three and was crowned a quarter midget national champ before graduating to TQs and midgets.

“Racing is something I’ve done since I was a little boy,” Danny said.* “It’s what I like best and, so far, it’s what I do best.* To me, it is the greatest sport around.”

Entrant champion Doug Caruthers not only fielded the cars which won the last two championships, but he also sired the drivers who won them.* When Doug wasn’t working on his racecars, which he’d done since 1947, he devoted his attention to passenger cars – thousands of them.* He operated the parking concession for Disneyland near his Anaheim, Calif. home.

Danny was not driving for his father when the accident occurred.* They had a disagreement several weeks before and Danny, after sitting out one race in the grandstands, shifted to a car owned by Jack Fitzpatrick.* Reportedly, earlier in the same evening on which the accident occurred, Doug and Danny had a father-son talk and patched up their differences.

A touching moment in the banquet came when Doug took the microphone to accept the awards on behalf of his late son.

“It is difficult to measure the devotion and dedication it took for a young man of 21 years old to accomplish this feat,” Doug said.* “I think as a father and a car owner, I can point to Dan with pride as an outstanding example of the sacrifice that it takes to become a champion.* I'm sorry that Dan won't be able to wear this ring that he worked so hard for."

Roll cages were made mandatory for the series starting in 1971.* Additionally, aircraft flush-type fuel caps or an approved equal were made mandatory on all cars.* All midgets were now required to have an on-board fire suppression system.

Nelson Stewart, a driver on the 1970 USAC Midget circuit and a crewman for Gary Irvin’s team, was awarded USAC's Certificate of Performance, “a salute for supreme courage.”* Stewart spent 11 weeks in the hospital with severe burns after an attempt to rescue a motorist who crashed on a central Indiana highway.* Stewart climbed a fence and had a hand on the car's door handle when the gas tank exploded, knocking him down and setting him on fire.* When USAC awarded Nelson his certificate, his wife Pam was four months away from giving birth to 1994-1995 series champion Tony Stewart.*

Bob Stroud and Steve Dailey were named to new posts.* Stroud, the midget supervisor from 1959-70, was appointed USAC Stock Car supervisor while Dailey, a pit steward and registrar since 1966, was named USAC Midget supervisor.

Less than two years after his championship, Bob Tattersall succumbed to cancer at age 47.* Also passing away were Marvin Edwards and Jim Blunk.* Edwards’ Hollywood Spring and Axle Company cars won 15 series events with drivers Parnelli Jones and A.J. Foyt.* Blunk served as the top assistant during much of Bob Stroud's tenure as supervisor for the division.

Bill Renshaw was tabbed as the Most Improved Driver.* Bob Lithgow won the sportsmanship award and Billy Shuman captured the inaugural Jim Blunk Award, given to the rookie who best exemplifies the ideals of a professional USAC driver.* Bob Hare of Lyons, Ill., captured the 1971 USAC Indoor Midget Racing Championship in January.
