1964: KENYON BEGINS REIGN AS KING OF THE MIDGETS

By: Richie Murray – USAC Media

Perhaps it was coincidence, perhaps it was just meant to be.* The year of the Beatles arrival on American soil and subsequent dominance of both the Billboard charts and the public consciousness just so happened to coincide with the starting line of midget racing’s unrivaled king and his reign of the speed charts and the win column in 1964.

Mel Kenyon reached unparalleled success in USAC National Midget racing, but in the beginning, after a fifth place finish in the 1962 standings, he kept at it in 1963 where he moved into second in the final tabulation.* His hope, then, was that he could stay with it, for in the Turkey Night Grand Prix race ending that year, he had defeated the top USAC drivers.

Kenyon’s comment after that race was, “Now, if I can just keep going.”* Bob Stroud, midget supervisor, heard him say it and remarked, “If you do, you'll be the next champion.”* The statement proved prophetic, and Kenyon hit his stride.

If you want a good lesson in the virtues of persistence, talk with Mel, who did one better in 1964 by scoring his first of seven USAC National Midget driving titles, proving he’s a prime example that “stick-to-itiveness” pays off in the long run.

A desire to win the title, plus his fine ability behind the wheel, paid off, and Kenyon succeeded in defeating defending champion, Bob Wente.* Kenyon raced in 55 events during 1964, winning seven and finishing 38 of them in the top-five.

Kenyon started the season in an effort owned by him and brother, Don, but switched to an A.J. Watson built Willard Coil entry, the only Watson-built midget at the time.* The Kenyon-owned car was driven by Les Scott for the balance of 1964.

For a time, Kenyon’s battle for the championship was a see-saw affair.* He took the point lead following his win on June 8 at Springfield (Ill.) Speedway and, as luck would have it, lost it a month later at the same track.* He got it back on July 22 at Rockford (Ill.) Speedway, then promptly lost it again on August 2 at Michigan’s Flat Rock Speedway.* At the Ionia Free Fair in Michigan on August 15, Kenyon regained the lead and was never headed from that point to the end of the season.

The 79 events contested in 1964 have stood the test of time as the most ever in a single year for the series.* The month of July this year alone contained 18 events, tying July of 1960 as the busiest month of USAC National Midget racing on record.*

“We've got so many races going,” Stroud laughed.* “We'll have to carry an adding machine to keep track of the points.”

Specifications were altered to include a maximum of 150 cubic inches for L-head engines, 132 c.i. for rocker arms and a continuation of 110 c.i. for overhead cam units.

Parnelli Jones was a man of “firsts” in 1964.* He became the first driver in series history to win two of the first three races to start a season.* Furthermore, he was the first to capture two consecutive victories to close out a season.* Ultimately, he became the first driver to win both the opening and closing races in a year, both of which came at Ascot Park.

An oddity occurred in the July event at the Belleville (Kan.) High Banks.* One could call it a "Bobtail" race in more ways than one.* The first four men to cross the finish line were all named Bob: Bobby Grim, Bobby Unser, Bob Wente and Bob Tattersall.* The race was run in 110 degree heat, and with 17 of 30 laps complete, the race was checkered early to dust.

Greentown, Indiana’s Denny Keith was killed following an accident on the 32nd lap of the feature at the Indianapolis (Ind.) Speedrome on August 14.* Keith flipped upside down on the fence, and after dragging along the top rail, flipped again, this time upside down on the track.* Keith was a veteran of two years of racing under the USAC banner.

Car owner Coxie Bowman was awarded the inaugural USAC officials’ trophy for his many contributions to the sport of midget racing.* The trophy, donated by Joe Baker Engineering, was presented to Mr. Bowman by Henry Banks, USAC Director of Competition.

The series kept right on proving itself as the finest training ground for drivers making it to the big time.* In fact, nine of the first 10 finishers of the 1964 Indianapolis 500 received their early training at the wheel of a midget.

“One of the biggest reasons why this division is a fine proving ground is the fact that we run so many races,” Stroud said.* “This helps keep the boys sharp and they learn more about driving from race to race.”
